Imje Tse commonly known as Island peak is another popular climbing peak in the Everest region. The mountain is logically an outlier on the south ridge of Lhotse Shar, and enclosed by the giant Lhotse and Imja Glaciers. The views from the summit of Imja Tse are quite spectacular, surrounded and dwarfed as it is by Nuptse (7,879 m), Lhotse 8,501 m and Lhotse Shar 8,383 m. The eastern horizon is dominated by Makalu 8,475 m and Baruntse 7,720 m while just across the valley to the south Ama Dablam 6,856 m rises shapely.
Island Peak climbing trip is a strenuous one which requires good physical fitness with good stamina and sense of adventure. It offers an excellent opportunity to climb a wonderful peak 6,173 m with interesting trek up to Everest Base Camp. We trek up the Dudh Kosi valley from Lukla, passing through some famous villages like Namche and Tengboche on our way to Everest Base Camp. After that we walk down to Chhukung and have a day break for rest before climbing the peak. We then follow the normal route for summiting Island peak. Our first camp for the Island Peak summit will be set at the High Camp which is at 5,600 m this adds the joy of climbing and helps a safe ascent. The most difficult section is a mixed rock and ice wall at a slope of around 45 degrees leading to the narrow summit ridge. The summit day will be long and stressful. For climbing Island Peak (Imja Tse)a basic knowledge of mountain climbing is require. We retrace our route back through Namche and Monjo, and from there we fly back to Kathmandu.
