Everest Base Camp (5200m)

The Everest region is a difficult high elevation region with altitudes ranging between 4400m and 5300m. But the Everest Base Camp trek is very popular with trekkers since it offers the chance to gaze at the stunning north face of the world’s tallest peak, Mt Everest (8848m).

The trekking season in the Everest region extends from April to late October. For those who do not wish to trek, you can drive up to the Base Camp via Rongphu Monastery. The Tibetan name of Everest is Qomolangma and some 34,000 sq km of its region is designated as the Qomolangma Nature Preserve along the north slope of the Himalaya. The mountain was first recognized as the world’s tallest in 1840 during the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India and the Himalayas. In 1865 the survey named it Mount Everest in honor of the genius behind this huge project, Sir George Everest. The wall of peaks stretching from Makalu to Everest and across to Cho Oyu creates a particularly effective rain shadow over this region, blocking most of the moisture that would otherwise cause snow in the winter and heavy rains in the summer. Between July and early September the monsoon still manages to push over the mountain barrier, draping Everest in clouds and occasionally dropping snow on the high ridges and rainfall on the lower valleys. Glaciers of modern era are located at the foot of the mountains, deep caves and snaking ice rivers present a magnificent view around the Quomolangma.
