Trip Introduction

Kathmandu Day Tour: Overview

Nepal, the proud home of the mighty Mount Everest, is a land of awe-inspiring landscapes and a rich tapestry of cultural heritage. Known for its spiritual significance, Nepal is deeply influenced by the traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism, which are reflected in its numerous temples, monasteries, and sacred sites. The country’s dramatic topography, crowned by the towering Himalayas, offers breathtaking views that are as diverse as they are beautiful.

The Kathmandu Day tour focuses on the Kathmandu Valley, a region that has been the cultural, spiritual, historical, and administrative heart of Nepal for over 2,000 years. Once considered the entirety of Nepal, Kathmandu Valley is a living museum of art, architecture, and history.

Kathmandu: The Heart of Nepal

At an elevation of 1,300 meters above sea level, Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is not just the political center of the country but also a treasure trove of history and culture. Historically, the Kathmandu Valley was a vast lake, which, according to legend, was drained by the Buddhist saint Manjushree. This transformation gave rise to fertile lands that eventually became home to the valley’s first settlers.

Today, Kathmandu is a city where the old and new coexist harmoniously. Known as the “Playground of the Gods,” the valley is dotted with hundreds of temples, ancient palaces, and monuments. The city’s spiritual landscape is primarily influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism, creating a unique atmosphere that is palpable in every corner of the valley. Kathmandu is not just a city; it is a vibrant fusion of sacred traditions, bustling markets, and modern development.

Detail itinerary of Kathmandu Day Tour

Today we start our tour around 0900 hrs heading west to Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu’s oldest and the most important shrine sitting on a hilltop west of Kathmandu city. It is the monuments which mark the birthplace of the Kathmandu Valley which later developed into the country of Nepal.

Swayambhunath is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, and it is filled with prayer wheels, shrines, and statues. Be prepared for a few playful monkeys that inhabit the area!

Then from the spiritual spot, we set off for a cultural/Historical immersion starting with a drive to Patan, one of the oldest Buddhist cities, rich in both Hinduism and Buddhism. Patan boasts 136 bahals (courtyards) and 55 major temples, many of which are located near the historic Patan Durbar (Palace) Square. Founded in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, Patan Durbar Square was expanded during the Malla dynasty and served as the royal palace. The vibrant architecture and intricate artwork showcase the beauty of Nepal’s rich Newar culture.

Patan is also renowned for its traditional metalworking artisans, particularly those who craft the famous Tibetan sound healing bowls. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the fascinating sound healing therapy, which uses vibrations to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and restore balance.

We then will drive to Babar Mahal Revisited to explore and have lunch. A museum of Rana architecture, Baber Mahal Revisited is a singular edifice. During their 1846–1951 dominance over Nepal, the Ranas introduced a distinctive fusion of European, local and Indian architecture.

It is a fascinating place that skillfully combines charm from the present with history. With its boutique stores and fine eating alternatives, this modern complex, housed in the tastefully restored royal palace of the early 20th century, provides guests with a wonderful experience.

After a delicious lunch and exploration of Rana architecture stroll around the local market.

Next, we will visit Pashupatinath, the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this two-tiered golden-roofed temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple complex features temples, ashrams, and statues along the banks of the Bagmati River. If you’re lucky, you may witness the evening Arati, a beautiful and reverent Hindu ritual.
