Paro (2,266 m)
Paro Valley extends from the confluence of the Paro Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers at Chuzom to the majestic Mount Jomolhari, near the Tibetan border. Known for its stunning landscapes, ancient temples, and traditional farmhouses, Paro is one of the widest and most fertile valleys in Bhutan. Thimphu (2,248 m)

Nestled at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, Punakha is home to the majestic Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most picturesque fortresses. Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley)

Day 01: Fly to PARO & drive to THIMPHU
The flight into Bhutan on a clear weather day will offer some dazzling scenic views of some of world’s highest glacial peaks. As you enter Paro valley, you will sweep past forested hills with the slivery Pa Chu (Paro River) meandering down the valley below.
Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watch tower) on the hill above the town will be fine sight. After finishing your immigration formalities, you will be met by our Representative at the arrival hall.
Then we drive 1 ½ hrs to Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, an exciting blend of tradition and modernity.

Day 02: THIMPHU: Tour In and Around THIMPHU
Today we start the tour with a visit to the 12th century Changangkha Temple considered to be the oldest temple in Bhutan; then it’s to the Institute for Zorig Chusum to see the local students learning traditional handcrafting skills. Zorig Chusum is the 13 distinct forms of arts and crafts that have been practiced in Bhutan since the traditional times. After we visit The Folk Heritage Museum to see the artefact and documents related to the educational history and ancient Bhutanese people’ daily life.
Later after 5 pm visit the Tashichhodzong, the fortress of the glorious religion, housing some ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body.

Day 03: Drive to PUNAKHA
Before descending into the warm Punakha valley, drive over the Dochu-La pass (3,100 meters), which provides an amazing view of the Himalayan peaks on a clear day. You will also have an opportunity to visit the magnificent 108 stupas which were constructed as a memorial by Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the queen, to commemorate the Bhutanese army’s victory in the 2003 conflict of Southern Bhutan.
This drive through the countryside provides a glimpse of local people’s everyday life. From late April through early May the trails are filled with rhododendron flowers creating a brilliant spring color.
Walk 20 minutes to Chimi Lhakhang through agricultural fields of mustards and rice. This Lhakhang was built in 1499 Ngawang Choegyel who is also known as the Divine Madman. He inherited the Divine Madman title since he revolted against the orthodox Buddhism in his time. He taught the people that religion is an inner feeling and it’s not necessary that one should be an ordained monk. He is also considered a symbol of fertility, and most childless couples go to his temple for a blessing.
Later we arrive Punakha the ancient capital of Bhutan. Here we will be visiting Punakha Dzong built in 1637, now it is the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks who move in mass from Thimphu to the warmer location. The three-story main temple of the Punakha Dzong is a breathtaking example of traditional architecture with four intricately embossed entrance pillars crafted from cypress and decorated in gold and silver.

Day 04: Drive to GANGTEY
Today it’s a drive of around 85 kilometers to the Gangtey Valley, also called Phobjikha Valley. Initially it goes to Wangdue Phodrang following the Punak Tsang Chhu (river) – visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong founded in 1638 by Zhabdrung – it gives the commanding view of the valleys below. Then the drive is up a winding mountain road with oak and rhododendron forest, flowing streams, and steep inclines. Drive east to Pele La (3,420m) marked by a chorten and an array of prayer flags. From there drop down to the Phobjikha Valley which is one of the beautiful high-altitude valleys in Bhutan. It is one of Bhutan’s few glacial valleys, Phobjikha is the preferred wintering place for black-necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan plateau.
Later one can enjoy the Gangtey nature route, which leads through the forest for one and a half hours from the monastery to the valley level.
This evening is free. If you are interested, you can stroll around the Gangtey Valley and pay a visit to the exquisite Gangtey Gompo.

Day 05: Drive to BUMTHANG
After breakfast in the morning, we travel to the Phobjikha Sanctuary, which is located behind Gangtey Gompa (a 16th-century monastery), to witness the endangered, black-necked cranes (who are only present from November to March).
Then head back to the east-west route and follow the prayer flags to Pele La Pass (3420m) to set out to Trongsa, the ancestral seat of Bhutan’s reigning dynasty. On a clear weather day one can see famous Bhutanese mountains like Jichu Drake, Kangbum, and Jumolhari. We will visit Chendebji Chorten, a stunning 18th-century building, along route.
In Trongsa we explore the largest Dzong of Bhutan, Ta Dzong which has a collection of historical Artifacts of the Royal Family. After, we drive further 2 hours more to Bumthang, the most richly endowed districts in terms of historical and spiritual legacy.

Day 06: Explore BUMTHANG
This is the center of Buddhism and one of Bhutan’s most beautiful valleys. Numerous temples have sprung up in the valley as a result of the Guru and his dynasty of Tertons, or wealth finders. It is also the first part to be inhabited of Bhutan.
Today initially after breakfast we visit one of the most holy sites of Bhutan. Guru Rinpoche meditated here. He subdued a local demon and left his body imprint on a rock. Then head south in a tarmac road along the right bank of the river to visit Jambay Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo.
Hike to Tamshing Lhakhang, which was established in 1501 by Pema Lingpa, following lunch. It has intriguing and antiquated Buddhist wall murals. Before heading back to the hotel, later, visit Jakar Dzong the seat of the district administration, also known as “the castle of the white bird,” and then meander around the Bumthang market district.

Day 07: Explore URA VALLEY - BUMTHANG
Today it’s a 42 kms drive to the Ura valley which is one of the most interesting villages of Bhutan. Visit to Ura village offers visitors a glimpse into Bhutan’s timeless rural lifestyle. The valley gives a medieval atmosphere. Also, Ura is believed to have been the home of the earliest inhabitants of Bhutan. On the way you can catch glimpse of Bhutan’s highest peak, Gangkhar Puensum (7,500m).
From a modest agricultural settlement, Ura has grown over the ages to become an essential component of Bumthang’s spiritual and cultural environment. It is frequently mentioned as one of the area’s oldest and most genuine communities.
Here we will also visit Ura Lhakhang a very popular spot in the area which plays host to the festival of Ura Tsechu in May. Lunch will be served out here. Then later we drive back to Bumthang for an overnight stay.

Day 08: Fly to PARO
Morning as per the flight schedule, drive to the airport to take a flight to Paro. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel for check in. Relax and rest.
In the afternoon visit Ta Dzong (watch tower) built in 1649 to protect the dzong. Now it’s the National Museum of Bhutan. It is located on the riverbank of Mangde Chu in Paro.
Later stroll around the Paro town.

Day 09: Visit TAKTSANG MONASTERY
After breakfast we visit Taktsang Monastery one of the most spiritual places of Bhutan. First, we drive then walk of approximately 2 hours uphill takes you almost a kilometre above the Paro valley floor.
The view of Taktsang Monastery built on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor is a spectacular sight. The Monastery is also an important pilgrim site for the Buddhists. The great Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress when he brought the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century.
He then mediated in a cave there for three months where the monastery was later built.
Then return back to Paro

Accommodations in the outskirts of Thimphu are somewhat limited, but you can still find luxury, mid-range hotels, as well as homestays and farmhouses.
Food & Restaurants:
- All meals are included in the trip cost (except for those taken at high-end resorts and hotels).
- Meals are typically served buffet-style, offering Bhutanese, Indian, and vegetarian options. In larger towns, you may also find Western and Chinese cuisine.
- Bhutanese cuisine is heavily spiced with red chilies. If you’re adventurous, try local specialties like Emma Datse, a cheese and chili dish.
- Drink only bottled mineral water and avoid tap water, fountain drinks, and ice cubes.
- Eat only thoroughly cooked food. Peel raw fruits and vegetables yourself.
- Avoid fresh salads unless washed with purified water and refrain from consuming unpasteurized dairy products.
- Most restaurants and hotel buffets are clean and reliable.
Health & Immunizations:
- Some immunizations are recommended but not mandatory for entry.
- Suggested vaccinations include polio, tetanus, typhoid, MMR, hepatitis A & B.
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from an infected country.

Altitude Sickness:
Note: The information below is provided for awareness and is not meant to alarm travelers. Most people experience few or no symptoms.
- Altitude sickness can occur due to a rapid ascent from low to high elevations. Mild symptoms include headaches, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, mild nausea, and fatigue.
- Upon arrival at high altitude, take it easy for the first couple of days. Drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol, eat regularly, and get enough rest.
- Severe symptoms require immediate descent to a lower altitude. Most cases are mild and improve with rest and hydration.
- Consult your doctor about medications like Acetazolamide (Diamox) to help acclimatization.
Emergency Services:
- Medical treatment is available in Thimphu and other major towns, but facilities in rural areas are limited.
- Emergency helicopter evacuation is generally not an option, so prevention is key.
- Your guide will assist in case of urgent medical needs.
- Travel insurance is highly recommended.
Time Zone:
- Bhutan follows GMT +6 hours.
- Timekeeping in Bhutan is relaxed. Please expect occasional delays, as schedules may vary.
Photography:
- Bhutan offers incredible photography opportunities, so bring ample memory cards, batteries, and backup equipment. Photo supplies are not widely available.
- Photography inside shrine rooms, monasteries, and religious institutions is prohibited.
- Always ask for permission before photographing people.
Restroom Facilities:
- Carry a small supply of toilet paper.
- In urban areas, flush toilets usually have a wastebasket beside them. Do not flush toilet paper, as plumbing systems are delicate.
- Public restrooms may not meet the hygiene standards you are accustomed to.
Electricity:
- Bhutan operates on 220–240 Volts, 50 Hz.
- Electricity can be unreliable in remote areas.
- Power outlets accommodate C, D, & G type plugs—an adapter may be necessary.
Shopping:
- Popular souvenirs include Thangka paintings, wooden masks, silver & metal crafts, textiles, and stamps.
- Bargaining is not common in Bhutan but may be possible at markets and select stores—ask your guide for advice.
Money, ATMs & Exchange Facilities:
- Bhutan’s currency is Ngultrum (Nu.), with an exchange rate of 1 USD ≈ 86.27 Nu.
- You can exchange cash at Paro Airport and banks in major towns, particularly in Paro and Thimphu.
- Accepted currencies include USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, CHF, HKD, CAD, DKK, AUD, and SGD.
- Larger USD denominations ($50 & $100) receive a better exchange rate.
- Only Visa and MasterCard are accepted at select high-end hotels and handicraft stores in Thimphu.
- ATMs are unreliable, so carrying sufficient cash (preferably in USD) is advisable.
- Keep your passport handy for currency exchange.
- We recommend bringing USD $30–50 per person per day for additional expenses.
- Ensure your cash is in good condition (no rips, marks, folds, or holes).
Staying Connected – SIM Cards:
- You can buy a local SIM card from Bhutan Telecom or TashiCell.
- eSIMs and mini-SIMs are not available.
Safety:
- Crime is rare in Bhutan, but basic precautions should be taken.
- Keep your wallet and passport concealed and secure.
- Use accommodation safes for valuables.
