Manaslu With Annapurna Trek: Overview

Manaslu with Annapurna trek is a 23-day adventure in the central part of Nepal.  This central region of Nepal is dominated by giant lofty Himalayas like Manaslu (8,163 m), Annapurna Ranges (8,091 m), and many other Himalayan Peaks. Basically, the program is traversing through the foothills of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m) and Mt. Annapurna range (8,091m), eight and the ten highest peaks in the world. This part of the region has some of the best diverse features of central Nepal. The terrain, landscapes, people, cultures and lofty Himalayas are just amazing.  Crossing three high passes above 5,000 m provides you with challenge and rewards you with spectacular views of the high Himalayas. Also, there will be an opportunity to explore the Phu & Nar Valley which was opened to tourism only from 2002.  The valley with strong Tibetan culture has medieval stone walled Tibetan villages, impressive Chortens, Monasteries, colorful prayer stones and encountering blue sheep on the trail.

Manaslu With Annapurna Trek: Highlights

  • Manaslu Circuit: This segment leads trekkers around Mount Manaslu (8,163 meters), the world’s eighth-highest peak. The trail passes through the Manaslu Conservation Area, offering views of snow-capped mountains, lush forests, and traditional villages. A significant challenge and highlight of this circuit are the crossing of the Larkya La Pass at 5,235 meters, which provides panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks.l
  • Phu and Nar Valleys: Diverging from the main trail, trekkers venture into the remote Phu and Nar Valleys, home to ancient Tibetan-influenced settlements. These villages have preserved their traditional culture, lifestyle, and religious practices. Visiting local monasteries and witnessing daily rituals offers insight into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
  • Annapurna Circuit Integration: After exploring the secluded valleys, the trek converges with the Annapurna Circuit, one of Nepal’s most celebrated trekking routes. This section includes the ascent to the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters, presenting trekkers with breathtaking landscapes ranging from arid highlands to verdant subtropical forests.

Manaslu With Annapurna Trek: Challenges

  • Manaslu with Annapurna trek is on a high-altitude trail reaching up to 5,416 m which susceptible to altitude problem. This is a real challenge as it can affect anyone depending on an individual from an elevation of 2,500m.
  • Altitude effect can be in a different form depending on the individual. In case of severity, one needs to be helicoptered out for immediate medical attention otherwise it can be fatal.
  • No proper medical clinic on the trail
  • Drive from Kathmandu can be delayed due to ongoing road repairing projects, sometimes you may have traffic jam, and some parts of the drive will be on the unpaved rocky mountain road trail.
  • In case of heavy snowfall and if the pass is closed the return trip will follow the same trail back where it started as it does not have an alternate route.
  • Weather plays a crucial role for having the successful and enjoyable trek in the Himalayas, so it is necessary to choose the right season for the trek.
  • Since Jomsom airstrip is in the mountainous terrain so weather plays a crucial role for the operation of flight. In case of cancellation of flight, the option is driving back to Pokhara through mountainous terrain road which takes around 7 hours. Flight Pokhara Kathmandu is much more reliable so after reaching Pokhara we can take the flight back to Kathmandu. (subject to weather conditions)

Difficulties: Demanding

The Manaslu with Annapurna Trek is a high-altitude trek rated as demanding, requiring trekkers to walk 5–8 hours daily along the ridges of the Himalayan peaks. It involves challenging ascents, steep descents, and crossing three high passes at altitudes of approximately 5,416 meters. Weather changes and the thin air at high altitudes further add to the challenge.

Altitude Challenges:

Reaching an elevation of up to 5,416 meters, this trek exposes adventurers to the risks of altitude sickness, a common issue above 2,500 meters. Symptoms like headaches, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing may occur as the air thins, making acclimatization essential. Severe cases of altitude sickness can be life-threatening, requiring immediate descent to lower altitudes.

Prevention tips for Altitude Sickness:

  • Acclimatize: Take rest days to adjust to the altitude gradually.
  • Limit Elevation Gain: Avoid climbing more than 500 meters per day.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Pace Yourself: Walk at a steady pace and avoid overexertion.
  • Avoid Smoking: Refrain from smoking to maintain oxygen levels.

If symptoms persist despite these precautions, descend immediately to lower elevations.

Who Can Undertake the Manaslu Nar Phu Trek?

This trek is ideal for experienced adventurers accustomed to high-altitude conditions. While it doesn’t involve technical climbing, its challenging terrain demands good physical and mental preparation. It is not recommended for beginners, pregnant women, or individuals with serious health conditions.

Preparing for the Trek:

Mental Preparation:

  • Assess your readiness for high-altitude trekking.
  • Consult a doctor to ensure you’re fit for the trek.
  • Consider meditation or mindfulness practices to stay mentally resilient.

Physical Preparation:

  • Build stamina by hiking 9–12 km daily with a weighted backpack.
  • Train with stair climbing and incline treadmill exercises.
  • Engage in strength-building activities like cycling, swimming, or jogging.

Best Seasons:

  • Autumn (Mid-October to Mid-December): Clear views and pleasant temperatures.
  • Spring (Mid-March to End of April): Lush landscapes but slightly hazy views.

Type of Trek:

The Manaslu Nar Phu Trek is operated as a full-package trip, which includes trekking permits, guide and porter support, accommodations, meals, and transportation.

Access:

The trek starts with an 8-hour drive on a mix of paved and rugged mountain roads.

Flight: Jomsom to Kathmandu Via Pokhara

This is similar to Everest region flight; the flight is on a small aircraft with a capacity of 15 to 17 passengers and with baggage allowance of only 10+5 Kg per person. As the airfield lies in the mountainous terrain the operation of the flight is subject to weather conditions. Early morning hours are good as the weather are mostly favorable. The afternoons are windy and become cloudy resulting in cancellation of flights. Delays and cancellation are quite frequent. In case of cancellation, we need to wait for the weather to become better and the flight to resume. Sometimes the flight can get cancelled for several days.

Option since there is a proper road operating from Jomsom to Pokhara, we can always take those facilities instead of waiting for the flight to happen the next day, which is never sure.  The drive from Jomsom to Pokhara takes around 07 hours on a mountainous terrain road and after reaching Pokhara we can always opt for flight to Kathmandu which is more reliable.

Baggage:

Baggage allowance during the flight is 10+5kg and during the trek you can carry around 25 kg as this is a bit of a long trek. The extra baggage in the aircraft will be arranged by booking extra space earlier.

Lodging:

Accommodation includes basic mountain lodges with private rooms featuring two single beds. Some lodges offer attached bathrooms, while most have shared facilities.

Meals:

Trekkers can enjoy a variety of Nepali, Indian, and Western dishes. Carb-rich meals like noodles, pasta, and rice are common, ensuring ample energy for trekking. Avoid uncooked food and drink only purified water to prevent illness.

Water:

It is recommended to take plenty of water during the trek to avoid dehydration. Mineral Water is available, but we do not advise as the plastic bottle pollutes the region so carry Water bottle with water purifying tablets. You can buy boiled water from the restaurant and fill the bottle at an extra cost before starting the trip

Group Size:

Normally our group size is between 2 to 10 participants – it is always great to have a small group instead of big groups.

Staff Support:

You will have the support of a Govt. registered trekking guide who can speak Basic English language and well acquainted with the area. All our Guides have received training in basic skills and knowledge about administering first aid and emergency medication.

We provide porters to carry your personal baggage and gear leaving just the day pack to be carried by yourself.  As this is a long trek with the weight limit of 25 kg per person, so we assign one per porter for a guest to carry the main luggage.

Typical Day During Trek:

Usually, the day begins around 6 am with tea or coffee and then I do wash and shave. After you need to go back to your room and pack your gear, followed by breakfast in the restaurant which will be as per your choice. Then we begin our trek, it goes around for 3 to 4 hours then we stop for lunch in a nice spot having nice cuisine, hygienic, and, if it is feasible, a good view of the Himalayas. We finish the journey for the day after trekking for a further three to four hours. Night will be spent in the simple basic mountain lodge. Dinner will be in the lodge restaurant where you get a menu to choose your meal.

Essential Equipment:

  • Clothing: Waterproof jackets, warm layers, gloves, and hats.
  • Gear: Trekking boots, sleeping bags, and a sturdy daypack.
  • First Aid Kit: Carry essential medications with prescriptions.

Health and Insurance:

  • Vaccinations: Consult your doctor for required immunizations at least 8 weeks before your trip.
  • Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance, including helicopter evacuation, is mandatory for safety.

Electricity:

Electricity availability during this trek varies depending on the elevation. While most parts of the trail have access to electricity, the supply may become limited in higher-altitude regions. It’s advisable to carry a power bank or solar charger for emergencies.

Communication:

Internet connectivity is available in major villages and settlements along the trail, with reliable strength in lower altitudes. However, as you ascend to higher and more remote regions, the connection becomes weak or may not be available due to the mountainous terrain.

For mobile data, both Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC) provide coverage along the trail. Nepal Telecom generally offers better network reliability on this route. Be aware that mobile networks become weaker and slower at higher altitudes, and some parts of the trail may lack coverage entirely.

To stay connected, consider purchasing an NTC SIM card with a data package before starting your trek. Many tea houses and lodges offer Wi-Fi services for an additional charge, which can be an alternative in areas without mobile data coverage.

Environmental Concerns:

Far Out Travel emphasizes sustainable trekking practices and encourages clients to minimize environmental impact. We discourage buying plastic mineral water bottles and using hot water for baths, as the latter often require firewood for heating.

We carefully select lodges that prioritize renewable energy sources such as kerosene, solar energy, or cow dung for cooking, heating, and lighting. By following these practices, we aim to preserve the fragile mountain ecosystem.

Visa Requirements:

All foreigners require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas can be obtained from a Nepalese embassy abroad or upon arrival at Kathmandu International Airport. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of departure. For convenience, you can complete the online visa application form via Nepal Immigration Online Services and present the printed slip at immigration.

Visa fees (in USD or equivalent currency):

  • 15 days: $30
  • 30 days: $50
  • 90 days: $120

Trekking Permits:

To trek in this region, you’ll need three permits:

  1. Restricted Area Trekking Permit
  2. TIMS Card
  3. Conservation Area Permit

Permits require at least two participants. To process your permits, provide scanned copies of your passport (including details such as name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and validity) and a passport-size photograph. Once in Kathmandu, you’ll need to submit your passport for a day to finalize the process.

About Adventure Travel:

Trekking in Nepal’s mountains is an adventure experience that often involves unpredictable challenges. These remote regions are underdeveloped, so expectations should be adjusted accordingly.

Itineraries are provided as general guides but may change due to weather, natural events, or unforeseen circumstances. We advise trekkers to remain flexible, optimistic, and prepared for any challenges that may arise. For clarity or concerns about the suitability of the trek, consult with your trekking agent in advance.
